A Dubai-based start-up, which won $100,000 at the Intense GITEX pitch showdown in 2016, is working on launching a driverless vehicles platform by 2020.

Acacus Technologies Dubai said it is now launching the next stage of its transportation offering, a driverless delivery solution which is planned to be on roads in Dubai by 2020.

The platform for the driverless vehicles will be developed by Acacus and designed to operate on the roads of Dubai.

Acacus said in a statement that it is in talks with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority and Dubai Taxi Corporation on providing guidance on regulations while the first parking trial of the platform was completed earlier in October.

It added that the vehicles will be low cost and targeted towards logistics and delivery service providers that require efficient operations at a low operational cost.

Since launching their software services in 2013, Acacus said its bespoke technology for the logistics and transportation space is already implemented by RTA and Etihad Airways.

Its machine-learning-based driver behaviour and driver distraction monitoring technology have enabled Dubai Taxi to install in-vehicle driver cameras and sensory devices to capture eye movement, head tilt and driving behaviour in real time.

The software also specializes in location tracking and vehicle diagnostics.

Talal Ben Halim, managing director and partner of the company, said: “Innovation is at the heart of UAE’s rise as a global economic giant and technology will take it further. In coming years Dubai and UAE will be the hub of global technology innovators, as we take the lead in developing as well as implementing new ideas faster than any country in the world.”

Dubai’s autonomous mobility strategy is expecting to generate AED 22bn per year, reduce mobility spending by 44%, and curb demand for parking by 50%.
