A ‘dislike’ rogue application on the social networking site Facebook has been exposed as a scam.

The app will “trick you into giving a rogue Facebook application permission to access your profile, posting spam messages from your account and asking you to complete an online survey,” writes Graham Cluley from security specialists Sophos.

Messages seen promoting the app read: “I just got the Dislike button, no now I can dislike all of your dumb posts lol!!” and “Get the official DISLIKE button NOW!”

Once the app has permission to run and has access to a user’s profile, it updates their Facebook status to promote the link and spread the message virally. It also asks users to complete an online survey, which ends up making money for the scammers, before directing them to a Firefox browser add-on for a Facebook dislike button developed by FaceMod.

“As far as we can tell, FaceMod aren’t connected with the scam – their browser add-on is simply being used as bait,” adds Cluley.

If users are really interested in trying out FaceMod’s add-on, they are advised to get it directly from the Firefox Add-ons page.
