Sophos today announced the release of two free apps designed for Android device security.

The latest version of Sophos Mobile Security for consumers and the new Sophos Mobile Encryption app help protect Android-based devices against malware and privacy issues, provide loss and theft protection, and allow Sophos SafeGuard Enterprise users to securely access encrypted files stored in the cloud.

Both apps are available for free download from Google Play at https://play.google.com/store/search?q=sophos&c=apps

According to the recent Worldwide Smartphone 2012-2016 Forecast Update by IDC, Android-powered phones constitute a 69% share of the smartphone market. Many of these devices are owned by business users who access cloud storage solutions such as Dropbox to retrieve sensitive data.

Sophos Mobile Security is a free lightweight anti-virus app designed to protect Android devices against malware, privacy issues and hardware loss-without reducing performance or battery life.

Among the enhancements in the new version, are scheduling facilities and a theft-protection feature that allows the user to designate contacts from the address book to send remote commands to a missing device via SMS. Command options include sending a message for a finder; causing the phone to ring loudly thereby drawing attention to it; and initiating a data wipe to mitigate privacy issues.
