Dubai unveils first autonomous taxi at GITEX

GITEX 2018 has witnessed the launch of a host of smart initiatives and services, including the test run of a driverless taxi.

Dubai’s transport authority unveiled the region’s first autonomous taxi at GITEX 2018, the technology exhibition taking place in the emirate from October 14-18.

Exhibits also included Dubai Metro spare parts manufactured through 3D printing, the AI-based automated Chat Bot system, and robotic cleaners for Dubai Metro stations.

The new initiatives are part of plans to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world. The Dubai Smart Self-Driving Mobility Strategy aims to transform 25 percent of Dubai’s total journeys into self-driving transit by 2030.

The autonomous taxi was designed in partnership with Dubai Silicon Oasis and DG World, and will run on dedicated routes at the Dubai Silicon Oasis.

It is equipped with cameras and sensors that fully view traffic and road conditions, control the vehicle, and avoid collisions.
