Introducing Meta

Facebook has rebranded to Meta during the Connect conference. The companies will form a social, 3D virtual space where users can share experiences and connect online. The result is a coming together of contemporary online social experiences and represents an evolution in social technologies, according to Zuckerberg. The Meta logo was also unveiled, with the company stating that, “The logo is treated in a blue gradient – as a nod to our heritage. It’s designed to be experienced in 3D so that it truly comes to life in the metaverse.” The new name refers to going “beyond” what is currently being done, according to the company.

Referring to the companies under the Meta umbrella, Zuckerberg had this to say, “I’m proud of what we’ve built so far, and I’m excited about what comes next – as we move beyond what’s possible today, beyond the constraints of screens, beyond the limits of distance and physics, and towards a future where everyone can be present with each other, create new opportunities and experience new things. It is a future that is beyond any one company and that will be made by all of us.”

The future of social media

The Connect conference brings together digital designers and developers from a wide range of fields and explores what the future might hold over the next decade. Topics to be covered include social connection, to entertainment, gaming, fitness, work, education and commerce. The company also announced their Presence Platform, a tool that will enable immersive learning for the next generation of digital creators.

Support for AR and VR

The company also talked about their work on augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. The potential of both was highlighted and Meta restated their continued support, stating that the two technologies were central to their vision for apps such as Facebook.
