Etisalat and Ericsson tackled sustainability in a themed event “ICT journey towards race to net-zero” at Sweden’s Expo 2020 pavilion.

A low carbon future

The event served to highlight the need to move toward a low carbon economy by leveraging new technologies. Focus was placed on ways to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and address the climate crisis.

According to Ericsson’s research, ICT technologies can aid in the reduction of global carbon emissions by up to 15% by 2030. As the UAE is the first Gulf country to commit to net-zero emissions by 2050, the event aligned with the UAE’s agenda for sustainable development.

Partnerships in the UAE

The two companies highlighted solutions and partnerships designed to support the move toward net-zero emissions and spoke about how technology can placed at the service of the environment. Etisalat and Ericsson also discussed how net-zero could be achieved in the UAE through the use of technology, highlighting how using 5G will assist in decarbonising industries.

Dr. Ahmed bin Ali, Group Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications at Etisalat said: “We realise the potential ICT has in reducing carbon emissions in industrial operations and accelerating the race to a net-zero future. The UAE has demonstrated outstanding leadership in taking initiatives to control emissions and increase energy efficiency. By providing reliable and innovative mobile networks and working alongside various industrial partners in the region, we aspire to leverage technology to create sustainable and new business models and support the UAE to reach its sustainable environment and infrastructure targets of Vision 2021.”

Fida Kibbi, Vice President and Head of Marketing, Communications, Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility at Ericsson Middle East and Africa said, “Sustainability being the core of our strategy, we work towards pioneering a more sustainable future. We aspire to use our technologies to accelerate the decarbonisation of our economy and find new ways to combat climate change by improving the energy performance of our products, as we reduce or own carbon footprint and combat climate change.”
