Review: Acer Swift X

Are you in the market for a laptop that packs serious power without a big price tag? Then the Acer Swift X could just be the right device for you

Simple, powerful and ultra-portable. These are the three words that best describe Acer Swift X.

With a two-tone aluminium chassis, Acer Swift X has a slightly modern yet typical laptop design. The lid of the device is draped in a metallic pink colour, which the company calls Prodigy Pink, while the rest of the laptop is in silver colour. While the body of the device has a metallic finish, the display bezels are made of black matte plastic.

Acer Swift X is quite compact and sturdy. Weighing at 1.39kg and 17.9mm thick, the laptop is perfect for people on the go. For a slim device, the Acer Swift X has a good selection of ports. On the left side of the laptop, you can find an HDMI, a USB-A, a USB-C which can also be used for charging, and a dedicated charging port. Meanwhile, on the right side, there’s another USB-A, a combo 3.5mm audio jack and a Kensington lock port. The Swift X’s power brick is also compact, resulting in a reasonable total carrying weight.

As for the screen, the laptop features a full-HD 14-inch IPS display with a 1920×1080 resolution. It also supports sRGB. The visuals look bright and the display delivers vibrant colours and good contrast. The top of the screen houses the 720p webcam, which is a bit disappointing. The device sports a backlit keyboard, which has crisp and tactile keys. When you open the lid of the laptop, the back deck raises a few degrees, making the keyboard more comfortable to use. A fingerprint reader for quick sign-ins can also be found just below the arrow keys of the keyboard. As for Acer Swift X’s trackpad, it has little to no drag, making it very responsive.

The Acer Swift X may be small and lightweight but it doesn’t compromise on performance. It is powered with AMD’s Ryzen 5000 processor and Nvidia’s RTX 3050 GPU, making it well-equipped enough to handle basic office tasks, a range of content creation jobs and some gaming. It runs on Windows 10 and is upgradable to Windows 11. It comes with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB solid-state drive.

The laptop leverages a fan with 59 0.3 mm blades and a pair of D6 copper heat pipes to optimise its thermal efficiency. It is fairly quiet during basic tasks, but it begins to spin when it’s engaged in heavier lifting.

The dual-firing speakers were adequate but not impressive. It is loud enough, however, there’s no bass so it’s a bit underwhelming when listening to music or bingeing shows from Netflix or Prime Video.

Battery life is another plus for the Acer Swift X. It’s equipped with a fast-charging 59W battery, which easily lasts a normal workday or a healthy nine hours of average, continuous use. As for wireless connectivity, the laptop sports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.

Final thoughts

The Acer Swift X is undoubtedly a reliable and powerful laptop for creative professionals. Battery life and ultra-portability are also among its strongest suits, making it a great productivity device for users on the go.
