Volkwagen’s ID Buzz is expected to appear on European streets this year, marking the comeback of the German auto manufacturer’s most iconic vehicle.

The famed Volkswagen Bus has been rebranded as ID Buzz and will join Volkwagen’s electric ID range of vehicles. The new van will be based on Volkwagen’s modular electric drive matrix and the traditional engine compartment has changed to become an additional compartment space. The ID Buzz will be available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive and allowing the vehicle to be equipped with one or dual motors on the front and rear axles.

Automation

Volkswagen has revealed that the ID Buzz will support Level 4 automation by 2025. As a result, the vehicle will be able to drive by itself, but will require human supervision and have manual override controls.

In the self-driven option, the steering wheel will neatly tuck inside the dashboard panel and merge with a 3D digital cockpit. Thanks to a partnership with autonomous-driving startup Argo AI, the ID Buzz will use laser scanners, ultrasonic and radar sensors and multiple cameras to monitor traffic, its surroundings, and objects on the road. Like its other EV siblings, the ID Buzz will initially be equipped with Level 2 semi-autonomous technology.

Power and battery life

According to Volkswagen, the ID Buzz will offer 369 hp and is expected to do 0 to 60 mph in 5 seconds. The 111-kWh battery pack will be underneath the floor, giving the MPV better weight distribution and a lower centre of gravity. The battery is estimated to provide a range of up to 270 miles and with a fast-charge system, 80% of its capacity can be charged in 30 minutes.

November of last year saw trials for the UAE’s first autonomous taxis and the sector is set for rapid growth as more companies announce plans for autonomous vehicles.
