‘Baby Shark’ takes a big bite on YouTube – first video to cross 10 billion views

The children song has left such giants like Luis Fonsi’s ‘Despacito’, Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’ and Wiz Khalifa’s ‘See You Again’ in its wake

YouTube 10 billion views Baby Shark

You know the song and you know every dance move associated with it. No wonder it is the biggest hit ever in the history of YouTube.

It’s neither an instant hit from Black Pink or Justin Beiber nor an all-time classic from Michael Jackson. ‘Baby Shark’, the children’s song produced by Pinkfong, a South Korean entertainment company, became the first video ever to cross 10 billion views in the history of YouTube.

“We are delighted to announce that our beloved Baby Shark has recorded another remarkable milestone,” Min-seok Kim, CEO of Pinkfong, said in a statement. “It has been a truly meaningful journey to witness how Baby Shark has connected people around the world, and we can’t wait to introduce Baby Shark’s further adventures that will bring unparalleled experiences to even more fans everywhere.”

The video’s achievement came on January 13. The No2 video of all time is Luis Fonsi’s ‘Despacito’, featuring Daddy Yankee. The 2017 hit has 7.7 billion views.

According to Billboard, Baby Shark video was released in June 2016 and debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No32. On Billboard’s global charts dated November 28, 2020, it peaked at No38 on the Global 200. Also in November 2020, the video reached 7.04 billion views to surpass ‘Despacito’ and become the most viewed YouTube video of all time. It was also certified 11-times multi-platinum by the RIAA that same month.

Since the popularity of ‘Baby Shark’ exploded, there has also been a massive 100-date tour in 2019, the launch of Nickelodeon’s pre-school series Baby Shark’s Big Show early in 2021, and a six-piece NFT collection in December 2021. Nickelodeon has also announced that it is developing a feature film around Baby Shark, reports Billboard.

Two of the biggest hits of recent time – Ed Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’ and Wiz Khalifa’s ‘See You Again’ – are No4 and No5 in the all-time views list at 5.58 and 5.38 billion respectively. Children’s nursery rhyme ‘Johny Johny Yes Papa’ by Looloo Kids is No3 at 6.1 billion.
