Apple debuts iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro lineups

The devices come with a new Crash Detection feature, a smartphone safety service with Emergency SOS via satellite, and enhanced battery life

Apple has unveiled its latest lineup of iPhone models – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The devices were introduced during Apple’s flagship event at the Steve Jobs Theater at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus

The iPhone 14 series comes in two sizes – 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches – and features a new dual-camera system, Crash Detection, a smartphone safety service with Emergency SOS via satellite, and enhanced battery life.

“Our customers rely on their iPhone every day, and iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus introduce groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. With the new, larger 6.7-inch display on iPhone 14 Plus, users can enjoy more content onscreen when browsing the web and even more text,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

“Both phones have a powerful new Main camera with a huge leap in low-light performance, advanced connectivity capabilities with 5G and eSIM, and the incredible performance of A15 Bionic, which helps enable even better battery life. All of this, tightly integrated with iOS 16, makes iPhone more essential than ever.”

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus feature a durable aerospace-grade aluminium design in five finishes – midnight, blue, starlight, purple, and (PRODUCT)RED.

The smartphones introduce a new standard for photo and video capture with a new 12MP Main camera featuring a larger sensor and larger pixels, a new front TrueDepth camera, the Ultra Wide camera to capture more of a scene, and Photonic Engine for a giant leap in low-light performance.

According to Apple, both models have an updated internal design for better thermal performance, gorgeous Super Retina XDR displays with OLED technology that supports 1200 nits of peak HDR brightness, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and Dolby Vision.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus also feature the durable Ceramic Shield front cover, ensuring protection from common spills and accidents with water and dust resistance.

The entire iPhone 14 lineup introduces new safety capabilities that can provide emergency assistance to users. Crash Detection on iPhone can detect a severe car crash and automatically dial emergency services when a user is unconscious or unable to reach their iPhone.

Additionally, the iPhone 14 lineup also introduces Emergency SOS via satellite, which allows antennas to connect directly to a satellite, enabling messaging with emergency services when outside of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

Under the hood, the iPhone 14 series are powered by A15 Bionic, the 5-core GPU enables even smoother graphics for video apps and high-performance gaming. It also powers camera features such as Photonic Engine and Cinematic mode.

In the UAE, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will start at AED3,399 and AED 3,799 respectively. Both will be available for pre-order starting September 9.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max features the Dynamic Island, which is Apple’s new design that “introduces an intuitive way to experience iPhone”. It also features a new Always-On display mode.

Available in four new finishes: deep purple, silver, gold, and space black, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max tout a Ceramic Shield front cover, a stainless steel body and textured matte glass design. Available in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch sizes, both models include a new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion that features the Always-On display for the first time ever on iPhone, enabled by a new 1Hz refresh rate and multiple power-efficient technologies.

“Our customers count on their iPhone every day, and with iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, we’re delivering more advancements than any other iPhone. iPhone 14 Pro introduces a camera system that empowers every user — from the casual user to the professional — to take their best photos and video, and innovative new technologies like the Always-On display and the Dynamic Island, which offers new interactions for notifications and activities,” said Joswiak.

He added, “Groundbreaking safety capabilities bring users even more security, offering help when they need it most. And with the incredibly powerful and efficient A16 Bionic chip and all-day battery life, this is the best iPhone yet.”

The iPhone Pro lineup also features mergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection. Emergency SOS via satellite will be available to users in the US and Canada in November, and the service will be free for two years.

The new Dynamic Island features a design that blends the line between hardware and software, adapting in real time to show important alerts, notifications, and activities. With the introduction of the Dynamic Island, the TrueDepth camera has been redesigned to take up less of the display area. The Dynamic Island maintains an active state to allow users easier access to controls with a simple tap-and-hold. Ongoing background activities like Maps, Music, or a timer remain visible and interactive, and third-party apps in iOS 16 that provide information like sports scores and ride-sharing with Live Activities can take advantage of the Dynamic Island.

The Pro lineup features a new 48MP Main camera with a quad-pixel sensor and features second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilisation. The smartphones come with a Photonic Engine mode, which enhances mid- to low-light performance in photos across all cameras through a deep integration of hardware and software: up to 2x on the Main camera, up to 3x on the Ultra Wide camera, up to 2x on the Telephoto camera, and up to 2x on the TrueDepth camera.

The devices are powered with the A16 Bionic chip with two high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores, the new 6-core CPU is up to 40 percent faster than the competition and easily handles demanding workloads. A16 Bionic also features an accelerated 5-core GPU with 50 percent more memory bandwidth.

The latest iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro series comes with iOS 16. Pre-orders begin September 9, the devices are priced at AED 4,299 and AED 4,699 respectively.
