Amazon workers in 40 countries to go on strike amid Black Friday sales

Amazon employees in the US, UK, India, Japan, Australia, South Africa and across Europe are expected to take part in the campaign called ‘#MakeAmazonPay’

Thousands of Amazon workers across 40 countries are reportedly planning to take part in protests and walkouts on Black Friday, one of the busiest days of the year for online shopping.

According to reports, the protests are aimed at pressuring the biggest e-commerce platform to make changes to ensure better pay and working conditions for its employees.

Amazon employees in the US, UK, India, Japan, Australia, South Africa and across Europe are expected to take part in the campaign called ‘#MakeAmazonPay’, which was coordinated by an international coalition of trade unions, with the support of environmental and civil society groups.

The e-commerce firm’s workers and activists are also expected to stage a rally in front of a residence owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in New York City.

Amazon spokesperson David Nieberg commented that while the firm is not perfect in any area, they do take their role and impact very seriously.

He then cited company’s target to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and that it’s “continuing to offer competitive wages and great benefits, and inventing new ways to keep our employees safe and healthy”.

Earlier this month, Amazon reportedly announced plans to lay off about 10,000 employees across its devices, retail division and human resources divisions.
