BuzzFeed announced its lay off of 12% of its personnel, or around 180 employees, in early December 2022, in an effort to reduce expenses as the online media company deals with challenges like a decline in advertising revenue and the conclusion of its integration of Complex Media.

As the newest digital publisher to adopt artificial intelligence, BuzzFeed would rely on ChatGPT maker OpenAI to improve its quizzes and tailor some material for its audiences.

Jonah Peretti, the company’s chief executive, stated the intention for AI to play a larger part in the company’s editorial and commercial operations this year in a note to staff that was sent out which was read by The Wall Street Journal.

In one instance, the business claimed that brand-new quizzes driven by AI would generate unique results.

The Wall Street Journal was the first publication to report on the memo.

According to Peretti’s memo, AI will help the creative process and improve the company’s content, with people serving as sources of inspiration, ideas, and “cultural currency.” He predicted that rather than just curating current information, AI and data would help “produce, personalize, and animate the content itself” in 15 years.
