Amazon to lay off 9,000 more employees

The decision follows an earlier announcement this year that stated that Amazon would be cutting 18,000 positions as part of a significant cost-saving effort

Amazon will be reducing 9,000 more jobs, the company’s CEO Andy Jassy informed the staff through a memo.

According to the company, the decision follows an earlier announcement this year that stated the company would be cutting 18,000 positions as part of a significant cost-saving effort.

The upcoming job cuts will be executed in the next few weeks and will predominantly affect employees working in the Amazon Web Services, People Experience and Technology (PXT), advertising, and Twitch divisions, according to Jassy.

“This was a difficult decision, but one that we think is best for the company long term,” he wrote in the memo.

He further explained that role reductions in these teams were not announced earlier as their analyses were not yet done at the time.

“Rather than rush through these assessments without the appropriate diligence, we chose to share these decisions as we’ve made them so people had the information as soon as possible,” said Jassy.

Similar to several other Big Tech companies, Amazon also significantly increased its workforce during the initial phase of the pandemic.

“This made sense given what was happening in our businesses and the economy as a whole. However, given the uncertain economy in which we reside, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more streamlined in our costs and headcount.”

Facebook-parent Meta also recently announced that it was laying off an additional 10,000 workers, on top of the 11,000 job cuts announced late last year.
