Dubai taps into $160 billion app market, to train 1,000 Emirati developers

The ‘Create Apps in Dubai’ initiative is designed to cultivate an innovation-based environment for digital applications in the emirate

Dubai has announced plans to triple the number of app creators by 2025 and strengthen its position as a global launchpad for future-oriented technologies.

In line with this, Crown Prince and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has introduced the ‘Create Apps in Dubai’ initiative, which was established by the Higher Committee of Future Technology Development and Digital Economy.

With global spending on applications reaching $160 billion and the number of downloads hitting 230 billion in 2021, the app market opens vast new opportunities for Dubai investors, entrepreneurs and technology professionals.

Create Apps in Dubai

The ‘Create Apps in Dubai’ initiative is designed to cultivate an innovation-based environment for digital applications in Dubai and transform the city into a prime destination for business opportunities by 2025.

Sheikh Hamdan said, “The digital transformation sweeping the world and the exponential growth of cutting-edge digital applications and platforms have created a new global competition for technological leadership. Dubai seeks to be at the forefront of this global race by providing a platform for fostering the development of 1,000 highly-skilled UAE nationals whose ideas and innovation will create a vibrant applications sector in Dubai.”

The programme will be managed by the Dubai Chamber for Digital Economy, in collaboration with government entities and technology companies, and will focus on training 1,000 selected UAE nationals in partnership with the private sector in Dubai. The initiative will prioritise areas and support development plans aimed at empowering and enabling these UAE nationals to play crucial roles in realising the country’s digital vision.

Sheikh Hamdan held discussions with developers of apps targeted at the global market, particularly in the fields of healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship, among others. These engagements aim to promote the exchange of ideas among experts, innovators, and developers and enhance Dubai’s position as a global launchpad for future-oriented technologies by encouraging greater sharing of digital and technological expertise.
