ChatGPT creator eyes Wikipedia-like collaborative approach for AI decisions

OpenAI president Greg Brockman mulls plans to employ a Wikipedia-inspired model to gather input on decisions impacting AI

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, revealed plans to explore methods to gather broad input on decisions impacting its artificial intelligence systems.

During the AI Forward event held in San Francisco and organised by Goldman Sachs Group Inc and SV Angel, OpenAI president Greg Brockman outlined the general approach OpenAI is adopting to advocate for global regulations on AI.

Among the insights he shared was a forthcoming initiative inspired by the Wikipedia model, where individuals with varying perspectives collaborate and reach a consensus on the content of the encyclopedia. This announcement hints at OpenAI’s intention to foster a similar collaborative process for their AI endeavors.

In reference to AI policy, Brockman emphasised that OpenAI is not confined to making unilateral decisions from Silicon Valley. Instead, they are actively considering the concept of democratic decision-making, acknowledging the importance of collective input.

Another idea presented by Brockman, which OpenAI further detailed in a blog post, involves advocating for global government collaboration to ensure the safe development of AI.

Brockman further examined different sources of inspiration, including Wikipedia and other avenues. Both he and OpenAI proposed the idea of establishing an organisation similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to impose restrictions on AI deployment, ensure compliance with safety standards, and monitor the utilisation of computing power.

Another suggestion put forward was the implementation of a global agreement aimed at constraining the annual growth of advanced AI capabilities. Alternatively, they proposed a collaborative international initiative in which major governments could participate.

Since its launch on November 30, ChatGPT, a generative AI technology capable of producing remarkably authoritative text based on prompts, has gained immense popularity, becoming the fastest-growing application of all time. However, concerns have also arisen regarding AI’s potential to generate deepfake images and spread misinformation, making it a focal point of attention.
