UAE-born super app Careem invests in engineering talents across Pakistan, Jordan and Egypt

Currently, more than 600 tech professionals are already contributing their expertise to Careem’s engineering hubs

Careem, the unrivaled everything app of the region, is making significant investments in its engineering hubs across Pakistan, Jordan, and Egypt. With a plethora of open engineering positions spanning Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Amman, Cairo, and Alexandria, Careem is actively seeking top-notch talent to join its tech workforce.

Currently, more than 600 tech professionals are already contributing their expertise to Careem’s engineering hubs, developing cutting-edge technology to power the extensive range of services offered by Careem’s Super App throughout the region. Impressively, a substantial 55 percent of Careem’s total engineering organisation is based in Pakistan, Jordan, and Egypt, with additional engineers located in the UAE and Germany.

The open roles available within Careem’s engineering hubs in Pakistan, Jordan, and Egypt encompass a wide array of specialisations. From front-end and back-end engineering to full-stack development, web and mobile engineering (both IOS and Android), data and AI, and infrastructure engineering, Careem is dedicated to assembling a diverse and skilled team. Since the beginning of 2023, Careem has successfully filled nearly 80 tech-focused roles in Pakistan, Jordan, and Egypt.

Driven by engineering leaders with experience from prominent global tech companies, Careem aims to solve real-life regional challenges and develop innovative products across its Super App platform services. These services include Careem Rides, Careem Food, Careem Quik, Careem Pay, and various partner services.

Commenting on the company’s vision, Stephen Kruger, Chief Technology Officer at Careem, emphasised, “Since its inception, Careem has united hundreds of technology professionals in the pursuit of building the region’s premier marketplace platform and catapulting the region into the digital age. While Pakistan, Jordan, and Egypt produce around 90,000 software engineers annually, there are only a handful of mid-size tech companies in the region for these graduates to join. This scarcity of opportunities can lead to a ‘brain drain,’ depleting the region of its brightest minds. Careem aims to prevent and reverse this trend by shouldering the responsibility of driving progress for the region, creating a lasting institution that offers meaningful opportunities to the region’s most talented individuals.”

Selim Turki, Senior Director of Engineering at Careem, echoed this sentiment, stating, “Our engineering team is expanding at an extraordinary pace, presenting numerous exciting opportunities for tech talent in Pakistan, Jordan, and Egypt to embark on Careem’s ambitious journey. Our first line of code was written in Pakistan, and for over a decade, Careem has showcased the ability to build globally competitive technology in our region. Now, we’re opening even more doors for talented engineers in Pakistan, Jordan, and Egypt to join us in shaping the next generation of technology. We’re searching for candidates who share our passion for simplifying and improving people’s lives while driving progress across the region.”

In its commitment to regional growth, Careem collaborates with both local and global academic institutions to conduct research and tackle previously unsolved regional challenges, thereby facilitating economic development. Recently, Careem partnered with the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) to introduce STEF-DHNet, a demand prediction model that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), integrating external features as spatiotemporal information and capturing their influence on ride-hailing demand.

Careem’s ‘Next Gen’ program provides invaluable learning and employment prospects for ambitious young engineers across the region. Next Gen engineers have the opportunity to collaborate with senior technical experts within the organisation, gaining hands-on experience in addressing real-world challenges through an embedded technical training program that utilises state-of-the-art resources and cutting-edge technologies. ‘Next Gen’ learning opportunities are available in all of Careem’s engineering hubs.
