UN Security Council holds first-ever talk on AI

During this session, Britain will advocate for an international dialogue on the impact of AI on global peace and security

This week, the United Nations Security Council is scheduled to convene its first formal discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) in New York. During this session, Britain will advocate for an international dialogue on the impact of AI on global peace and security.

As AI technology continues to advance, governments worldwide are grappling with how to address its potential risks and implications. The transformative nature of AI has the potential to reshape the global economy and significantly alter the international security landscape.

With the current presidency of the UN Security Council, Britain has been actively seeking a leadership role in the regulation of AI. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will chair the discussion on Tuesday, emphasising the importance of addressing AI’s implications comprehensively.

In June, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed support for a proposal put forth by AI industry leaders to establish an international AI watchdog body similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This indicates a growing recognition of the need for global cooperation and governance in the realm of AI.
