UAE’s MBZUAI launches new programmes to cultivate talents for $225 billion robotics industry

MBZUAI launched two new departments and four associated graduate programmes dedicated to robotics and computer science

The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has introduced two new departments and four graduate programmes that cater to the escalating global demand for robotics and computer science.

These burgeoning disciplines are projected to reach astonishing values of $225 billion and $140 billion respectively, by the year 2030.

The freshly established departments will seamlessly complement MBZUAI’s already prestigious computer vision (CV), machine learning (ML), and natural language processing (NLP) departments, which have secured a spot among the top 20 globally in CSRankings.

The new departments will provide an environment for distinguished faculty, researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and aspiring students in the fields of robotics and computer science.

Concurrently, MBZUAI has launched master’s and Ph.D. programmes in robotics and computer science, a strategic move that will further elevate the UAE’s artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem and reinforce its position as a leading international hub for AI research and innovation.

“The addition of these two new departments represents MBZUAI’s lasting effort in developing a solid foundation for research excellence and innovation in artificial intelligence,” said Eric Xing, President and University Professor, MBZUAI.

“The university will continue to bring into Abu Dhabi world leading faculty and researchers in the fields and to empower students to become pioneers with highly sought-after skills in developing advanced AI tools and applications across industries. Given the digital renAIssance we find ourselves in, skills in these disciplines are in high demand.”

The Robotics Department at MBZUAI will spearhead robust, high-impact research, with a particular emphasis on robot learning and algorithms rather than the development of new robot hardware. Research areas will encompass deep learning, control theory, robot manipulation, quadruped locomotion, human-robot interaction, robot-assisted surgery and healthcare, swarm robotics, precision agriculture, and environment and infrastructure monitoring.

Robotics is transforming sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, and transportation, with the robotics technology market expected to exceed $225.6 billion by 2030. However, the growth faces potential challenges due to a global talent shortage.

Meanwhile, the Computer Science Department will offer unparalleled depth in foundational technologies and entrepreneurship. The global computer science job market is booming, with a projected compound annual growth rate of 14.5 percent and an estimated 3.5 million jobs by 2026. MBZUAI’s master’s and Ph.D. programmes will cater to the rising demand for advanced computer science skills.

The university’s visionary approach and pioneering initiatives establish it as the sole institution offering exceptional AI programmes in the UAE, positioning the nation as a global leader in AI research and education. Prospective students can apply for the 2024 admissions year starting from September 1, 2023, as MBZUAI continues to shape the future of AI education, research, and innovation worldwide.
