Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) and Derq, an AI analytics solutions developer for road safety and traffic management, have jointly introduced 14 AI Smart Pedestrian Crossing Systems in DSO as part of their partnership to enhance smart city solutions.

Derq’s “Real-Time Perception and Connectivity AI Platform” is specifically designed to detect pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users. This system, the first of its kind in the region, integrates with road infrastructure to improve safety.

Utilising patented behaviour prediction models, the technology can proactively activate warning signs, in-road lights, and traffic signal controllers in anticipation of pedestrians crossing, effectively preventing potential conflicts with oncoming vehicles. The system also collects data to increase road users’ awareness and improve responsiveness to safety issues and traffic performance. Extensive testing over two years was conducted to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the proof of concept.

The system’s AI algorithms can detect and track vehicles and road users approaching the pedestrian crosswalk, optimising the reaction time of surrounding vehicles. Control algorithms allow for custom alerts based on specific crossing scenarios, ensuring optimal safety and traffic management.

The system is also equipped with an ultra-high speed and low latency 5G connection, enabling extensive data collection and facilitating remote operation, maintenance, and configuration capabilities. In the future, the system will use 5G communication technologies to communicate safety information and alerts to connected vehicles approaching the pedestrian crosswalk.
