Saudi Arabia taps Turkish defence firm to localise drone manufacturing

In the post on X, SAMI declares that the agreement marks a substantial advancement in their unwavering commitment to Saudi Arabia’s defence sector

Saudi Arabia has reportedly signed a strategic collaboration agreement with Turkish defence titan Baykar Tech to usher in a new era of drone production within the Kingdom’s borders.

The announcement of agreement was made via the digital platform X, previously known as Twitter, by the esteemed Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI).

In the post, SAMI declares that this agreement marks a substantial advancement in their unwavering commitment to the national defence sector, bolstering the core of Saudi Arabia’s local capabilities. The organisation noted that this represents a determined stride toward enhancing SAMI’s role and amplifying the symphony of the kingdom’s expertise.

According to local media reports, the culmination of this partnership reached its high point in July when Saudi Arabia made history by committing to procure Turkish drones from the Baykar, marking the most notable contract within Turkey’s defence sector.

Since 2021, investments and financial support from Gulf nations have alleviated economic pressure on Turkey, including currency reserves. This shift follows Ankara’s diplomatic efforts to mend relations with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
