SAS launches free data literacy courses

‘Data Literacy in Practice’ sets learners on an analytics career journey, according to SAS

The rapid growth of generative AI has increased the demand for understanding data in a world already driven by data at a fast pace. Data literacy has transformed from a mere option to an essential skill across all fields. To support the development of these crucial skills, SAS has introduced its second free e-learning course on Data Literacy, called “Data Literacy in Practice.” This course enables individuals and professionals to confidently explore and visualise data.

Dr. Emily Pressman, the creator of the SAS Data Literacy series, emphasised the importance of data literacy in today’s data-rich environment.

“In a world overflowing with data, unlocking its power sets you apart. Data literacy is more relevant than ever for young learners and professionals wishing to upskill and reskill. Our courses are designed to be easily consumed by learners and integrated into instruction and professional development offerings,” said Dr. Pressman.

Enhancing data literacy benefits everyone, be it students, educators, or professionals. Educators can better equip students for their careers, employers can enhance their workforce’s data literacy, business professionals can improve decision-making through data analysis, and individuals can harness the potential of data for personal and professional growth.

Key features of the Data Literacy in Practice course include:

  • User-friendly approach: The course caters to all levels of data literacy, avoiding complex mathematical terminology and focusing on practical understanding. This approach encourages and supports learners throughout their journey.
  • Real-world instances: The course integrates real-world examples, immersing learners in scenarios where data drives informed decisions for a small business owner. This practical approach helps learners apply their data literacy skills to real-life situations.
  • Flexibility and self-paced learning: SAS Data Literacy e-learning courses allow users to learn at their own pace, anytime and anywhere. With modular content accessible on various devices, learning can seamlessly fit into busy schedules. The self-paced course can be completed in less than three hours.

While Data Literacy in Practice can be taken independently, it becomes more potent when combined with the free SAS Data Literacy Essentials course. Data Literacy Essentials introduces fundamental data literacy concepts, making it an ideal starting point.

Data Literacy Essentials has been used in about 80 countries and across over 600 educational and non-academic organisations, including businesses, government agencies, and more. Combining the knowledge from Data Literacy Essentials with the practical data visualisation skills from Data Literacy in Practice prepares learners for the next step: SAS Visual Analytics 1. This pathway sets learners on a trajectory towards a career in analytics.

In the face of global disruptions, business resilience is crucial for survival. SAS’s survey, “Resiliency Rules,” revealed that resilient organisations prioritise data culture and literacy. These organisations don’t just use data management tools; they foster a culture of utilising data to solve problems, find answers, and make informed decisions.
