Bahrain: New online system allows expats to renew residency, work permits when overseas

The employer can also utilise the Expatriate Management System to extend the work permit by selecting the desired permit duration and finalising the payment procedure

A new service has been introduced to facilitate the renewal of residency and work permits for expatriates who are currently outside Bahrain. This service is designed to cater to expatriates employed in both the commercial and government sectors, including registered labourers and domestic workers. Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, the Under-Secretary for Nationality, Passports, and Residence Affairs (NPRA) at the Interior Ministry, announced this development.

To avail of this service, individuals can utilise the National Portal of Bahrain for renewing their residency permits. As for the renewal of work permits, it can be done through the Expatriate Management System or official LMRA channels. Shaikh Hisham emphasised the ongoing efforts to modernise and enhance services, achieved through collaboration between government entities and private organisations. He commended the effective coordination with the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), which has resulted in numerous facilities being made available.

Nibras Talib, the CEO of LMRA, underscored the strong partnership between LMRA and NPRA, emphasising their commitment to providing convenient solutions to strengthen the working environment. This new service allows employers to renew their employees’ work permits online from outside Bahrain, provided that the renewal is initiated before the permits expire. He noted that this step is part of an initiative aimed at expediting work processes and meeting the demands of business owners and investors who rely on expatriate workers.

Employers can choose the duration of the work permit and complete the payment process using the Expatriate Management System. Additionally, they have the option to complete the renewal process and pay the applicable fees by visiting one of the banks authorised by LMRA.
