Elon Musk announced that his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, will be integrated into his social media platform, X, and will also be available as a standalone app. He revealed that xAI has released its first AI model, a chatbot named Grok, which has been made accessible to all X Premium+ subscribers.

The primary goal of Musk’s startup is to develop AI tools that aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge and understanding. Grok, the chatbot, has been designed to provide answers with a touch of humour.

Musk, who has been critical of the AI efforts of major tech companies, launched xAI in July, positioning it as a “maximum truth-seeking AI” that seeks to comprehend the fundamental nature of the universe, competing with Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI.

Musk noted that Grok has the advantage of real-time access to information through the X platform, setting it apart from other AI models. It’s worth noting that X, Musk’s social media company (formerly known as Twitter), is a separate entity from xAI, but the two closely collaborate. xAI also collaborates with Musk’s electric car company, Tesla, as well as other businesses.

In a recent interaction with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Musk emphasised that AI is potentially the most disruptive force in history and could eventually automate a wide range of tasks, potentially transforming the nature of employment as we know it.

In 2015, Musk co-founded OpenAI, the organisation behind ChatGPT, which has generated considerable excitement for generative AI technology worldwide. However, he stepped down from the board of OpenAI in 2018.
