Saudi Aramco embraces Industry 4.0, collaborates with Nokia Bell Labs

Building upon the vision of the recently launched Aramco Digital Company, the MoU sets the stage for accelerated digital transformation within the Kingdom

In a significant move towards digital transformation, Aramco, the world’s largest energy company, and Nokia Bell Labs have inked a non-binding R&D collaboration agreement. The partnership aims to support the creation and development of proof-of-concept solutions for Industry 4.0 (4IR) digital use cases across priority industrial sectors in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and beyond.

Accelerating digital transformation globally

Building upon the vision of the recently launched Aramco Digital Company, the memorandum of understanding (MoU) sets the stage for accelerated digital transformation within the Kingdom, the Middle East, North Africa (MENA) region, and globally.

The collaboration focuses on leveraging cutting-edge research and technologies from both Aramco and Nokia Bell Labs. Industries such as oil and gas, utilities, mining, manufacturing, and logistics are set to benefit from joint research and development efforts. The goal is to develop proof-of-concept solutions and validate technologies in real-world deployments, expanding enterprise industrial automation applications.

In addition to driving innovation, the collaboration aims to foster a comprehensive ecosystem for 5G and emerging technologies. This initiative is geared towards integrating cutting-edge technologies that will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of industrial sectors.

Nabil Nuaim, Senior VP of Aramco Digital & Information Technology, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasising its role in digitalising industries and transforming national talent capabilities. The collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs is seen as a major step towards fostering a culture of innovation during the Industry 4.0 era.

Thierry E Klein, President of Bell Labs Solutions Research at Nokia, highlighted the collaboration as a commitment to driving innovation. The joint efforts aim to develop advanced industrial use cases, providing new technologies for a safer, more productive, and sustainable future. The collaboration is poised to co-create groundbreaking solutions that unlock new business opportunities for industrial operations in Saudi Arabia and on a global scale.
