SpaceX launches satellites with direct-to-cell capabilities

The initial set of Starlink satellites is designed to transmit phone signals directly to smartphones from space

T-Mobile announced that SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket carrying the initial set of Starlink satellites designed to transmit phone signals directly to smartphones from space.

In an announcement made in August 2022, T-Mobile disclosed its partnership with SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, to utilise Starlink satellites for extending network coverage in certain regions of the United States.

This collaboration extends globally, with wireless providers such as Japan’s KDDI, Australia’s Optus, New Zealand’s One NZ, and Canada’s Rogers also working with SpaceX to implement direct-to-cell technology.

T-Mobile specified that the initial direct-to-cell service would commence with text messaging, with plans to expand to voice and data capabilities in the subsequent years.
