Samsung to make Tesla even smarter

The primary consumer benefit of this collaboration is the ability of SmartThings Energy to connect with Tesla Powerwall, Solar Inverter etc

Samsung Electronics has revealed a new collaboration with Tesla, set to be presented at CES 2024. This integration will link SmartThings Energy with various Tesla products, including the Powerwall home battery, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charging solutions, and electric vehicles (EVs), using Tesla’s open APIs. The partnership aims to enhance SmartThings Energy’s connectivity, contributing to Samsung’s goal of creating seamless home experiences.

Chanwoo Park, EVP and Head of IoT Development Team of Device Platform Centre at Samsung Electronics, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, stating that Tesla Energy’s customers can now manage their home’s power status through SmartThings Energy and Samsung devices alongside the Tesla app. The collaboration represents a milestone for Samsung in expanding its solutions beyond home appliances.

The primary consumer benefit of this collaboration is the ability of SmartThings Energy to connect with Tesla Powerwall, Solar Inverter, Wall Connector charging, and EVs, providing users with information on energy production, storage, and usage. Additionally, users can prepare for power disruptions through SmartThings Energy’s synchronisation with the Tesla app’s Powerwall “Storm Watch” function, receiving alerts on Samsung TVs and mobile devices in extreme weather events. Users can activate AI Energy Mode to optimise the remaining backup energy stored in Tesla Powerwall during power outages.

Samsung’s use of the Tesla API aligns with its commitment to the Net Zero Home project and improving the multi-device experience for SmartThings users. Drew Baglino from Tesla expressed excitement about enabling interaction between Tesla products and other intelligent devices, with Samsung being an early developer in this regard.

The demonstration of SmartThings Energy connected to Tesla Powerwall will take place at the Samsung booth at CES 2024. The actual service is under development and is expected to launch in the second quarter of 2024, with features subject to change.
