IBM leading the GenAI race, report points

Currently, IBM boasts of over 1500 patent applications in 2023, this is more than the double the number that Microsoft has.

While Google and Microsoft have been battling the GenAI battle, IBM has moved ahead and now currently holds the most patent applications in GenAI, according to a study pointed out by Digital Science. The report also pointed out that other leading companies like Intel, Adobe, Samsung, and Baidu are in the top 10.

Currently, IBM boasts of over 1500 patent applications in 2023, this is more than the double the number that Microsoft has.

Each of these companies are in the battle for the top position, as with Gen AI driving a patent grant increase of 16 per cent in the last five years. There also are a 31 per cent increase in applications. Today, businesses are keen to continue developing the technology, and grow and transform their enterprise operations.

The study pointed out that patent applications are strong indicators of how enterprises and industries see the future in terms of technology value and innovation. It stated companies that are developing AI innovations are likely to seek a patent.

While AI adoption is still low, the high number of patent applications indicate more innovations. The report indicated currently Gen AI patents make up close to 22 per cent of the total number of AI patents.

The report suggests that Gen AI patents make up roughly 22% of the total number of AI patents – a figure that is only continuing to grow, with over half a million patents in this area in the last five years. IBM currently provides critical support for a range of key industries, the aim is to focus on areas like AI, on indicating how AI can cause impact.

IBM’s report itself indicates that 82 per cent of business leaders have already deployed Gen AI and many are aiming to deploy GenAI within a year. On goverance and ethics, there are close to 96% are prioritisation in the segment, focussed on shaping industry and internal frameworks. Data security is also vied as critical.

There is strong focus on promoting safe and responsible AI by IBM, it has formed an AI alliance with Meta at the end of 2023 to bring open-source innovations. Both Meta and IBM are looking to bring together leading scientists, universities, developers and businesses to address real AI concerns. The companies are looking to build a platform to share and create solutions that fit the needs of developers, adopters, and researchers, globally.

IBM also aims to improve workers’ AI skill sets and train over 2 million learners by 2026.
