Today, we delve into the insights of Mariam Khafagy, Regional Sales Operations Lead at GfK, an NIQ Company. From engineering to AI, her story reflects a profound engagement with digital transformation and the pivotal role of women in shaping the tech industry’s future. Join us as we explore her reflections on challenges, triumphs, and the relentless pursuit of innovation.

Tell us about what got you interested in technology, why did you choose the space and field of technology?

I have been working with GfK, an NIQ Company since 2020. I started my journey at GfK as Regional Sales Operations Lead. Before this, I was working with Dyson as Head of Owner’s Experience, prior to which I held several roles in Philips Middle East & Turkey as well as Unilever.

I have pursued a Masters in Science in Renewable Energy Engineering from Herriot-Watt University and completed Bsc in Chemical Engineering and Engineering Management from the American University of Sharjah.

Coming from an engineering educational background, the biggest factor that excites me about technology is its ever-changing and dynamic trend. The tech industry is constantly evolving, and that’s what excites me most. There’s always something new to learn and new challenges to tackle.

Technology helps humans to connect with others around the world, share information and ideas, and build communities.

Over the years, in my working career, technology has enabled me to lead many digital transformations, plan, launch, and manage online and offline activities.

Could you share your journey in technology, the challenges you faced, and how did you overcome them?

I am happy to share that I have a strong track record in leading digital transformation, strategy development and customer experience optimization. At GfK, I lead the gfknewron team offering clients insights from the latest AI-powered platform.

gfknewron is an important step for me and also in GfK’s transformation from a classical market researcher towards an AI-powered data analytics and consulting company.

Where companies can now access market, consumer, and brand data from a single source of truth to answer questions like: What was bought where and at what price? Who bought it and why? What should I do next to grow my business?

The AI-supported predictions and practical guidance will support sustainable business growth.

Technology has helped me lead strategic projects with a focus on profitable geographical expansion, customer experience, and profit generation.

I am constantly learning and evolving to understand new tech which is evolving every day. This is an ongoing process for me.

At work, I closely follow AI solutions that can bring significant enhancements in efficiency. To get it right, you need to invest time in machine learning to continuously improve the accuracy of the output models and predictions.

What is your take on women in technology and how is the landscape changing? What can be done to ensure there are more women in tech roles?

The landscape for women in technology is evolving.  I have seen more women achieving leadership roles in tech companies and startups. There are quite a number of successfully led start-ups in the region which are owned by women. Many companies have female CTOs on their board.

Having more women in technology will lead to more creative solutions, better products, and a more equitable society. I am ecstatic to see many women entrepreneurs in the region marking significant progress in their field of work.

While the tech industry can be challenging at times, especially for women, the sense of accomplishment and the opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself keeps me motivated. I believe that technology has the power to change the world, and I’m excited to be a part of that journey.

What is the biggest obstacle that women in technology face?

I think the industry has changed positively over the years offering good progress to the woman. The tech industry is taking proactive steps to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women.

We should all encourage young girls to pursue tech and science education from a young age. By providing suitable mentorship and support we will be able to see more and more women in tech space.

Investing in women-owned tech companies is an additional approach to help women in the industry. This is especially important in the Middle East where funding for female-founded start-ups represents less than 10% of the region’s venture capital funding.

Finally, along with promoting diversity at work, companies should also create flexible work arrangements for working mothers to support work-life balance.

What advice would you give women?

A young woman entering the field should always prioritize mentorship and choose the right role model.

Mentorship and right guidance are very important for everyone. This would help career development opportunities for women in tech.

I would urge every woman to step out and network with like-minded people to exchange ideas and their thoughts. Networking not only boosts personal growth but the right contacts lead to many positive business possibilities.

It helps, in the long run, to get supported and be surrounded by other women in tech professions.

Lastly, always believe in yourself and work towards achieving your goals and dreams.
