Toshiba launches new MG10-D series HDDs to boost enterprise storage performance

Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH introduces the MG10-D Series, a new line of high-capacity HDDs optimized for enterprise servers and storage solutions, featuring enhanced performance, energy efficiency, and robust data security.

Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH has unveiled its latest innovation in hard disk technology, the MG10-D Series. These new air-filled conventional magnetic recording (CMR) hard disk drives (HDDs) support SAS and SATA interfaces and are available in capacities of up to 10TB. This series represents a culmination of over half a century of Toshiba’s engineering expertise, designed to enhance performance and energy efficiency.

The MG10-D Series is positioned to meet the growing needs of enterprise server and storage systems. It features advanced options such as sanitize instant erase (SIE) and self-encrypting drive (SED), providing robust security solutions that protect critical data across various applications.

One of the standout models in the series, the 10TB MG10ADA10TE, demonstrates significant improvements over its predecessors. It delivers approximately a 13 per cent increase in maximum sustained transfer speed, reaching up to 268MiB/s, and doubles the cache buffer size to 512MiB. Additionally, it reduces power consumption by about 21 per cent in active idle mode, lowering it to 5.74W.

Larry Martinez-Palomo, Vice President and Head of the Storage Products Division at Toshiba, emphasized the series’ benefits for enterprise environments. “The MG10-D Series is designed to seamlessly integrate into existing infrastructure while delivering outstanding performance and reducing total cost of ownership,” he said.

“Its cutting-edge design is particularly suited for business-critical applications like data analytics, email, data retention, and surveillance, providing a sustainable solution for modern enterprise demands.”

The MG10-D Series HDDs, available in 2TB, 4TB, 6TB, 8TB, and 10TB capacities, are designed for 24×7 enterprise reliability. They feature a workload rating of 550TB and an annualized failure rate (AFR) of 0.44 per cent.

With a mean time to failure/mean time between failures (MTTF/MTBF) of 2 million hours, these drives are built to withstand rigorous enterprise environments. The series also accommodates various interface needs with 6Gb/s SATA or 12Gb/s SAS options, supporting Advanced format 512e and 4Kn.

A 512n option is also available in smaller capacities (1TB, 2TB, and 4TB) to support legacy systems.

Toshiba plans to release the MG10-D Series in the third quarter of this year, aiming to set a new standard for HDD performance and reliability in enterprise applications.
