Telecom Egypt has announced that Cairo is soon to be connected to the FLAG Telecom global city-to-city network.
The connection will allow the two companies to offer managed high bandwidth services (MBS), and other IP-based services to businesses in central Cairo.
“Many customers are looking for city-to-city connections around the world and service level guarantees. FLAG Telecoms network platform connects the major business centres our customers want to reach,” said Akil Beshir, chairman of Telecom Egypt.
“We are a landing partner on the FLAG Europe-Asia cable, and our facilities are already interconnected, allowing us to offer advanced network services to our customers and other leading carriers quickly. We expect this to evolve into the first major Internet exchange in the Middle East.”
Intercontinental Cables
The FLAG Europe-Asia cable has connected the UK to Japan since 1997, and is the first cable in a planned network of intercontinental cables implemented by FLAG, which is owned by Bell Atlantic, GTE and the Dallah Al Barakah Group.
By connection to the cable, carriers and ISPs in the Egyptian capital will be able to access a full-channel managed bandwidth service for connection to other city centres. Services will be governed by a service level agreement.
“We have seen a dramatic increase in high-capacity broadband requirements both from the Middle East and to the region from other international carriers,” said Andres Bande, chairman and CEO of FLAG Telecom.
“We are delighted to have signed this agreement with Telecom Egypt and we expect to provide city-to-city services during the fourth quarter of this year.”
