Another month has past and yet more viruses have been discovered as anti-virus vendor Sophos reports that 474 new viruses are now lurking in cyber space to wipe the hard drive of any foolhardy user.
Of the 73,553 viruses that have been identified by Sophos so far, W32/Klez-G proved to be the most effective during April as it accounted for 77.8% of infection reports. The virus’ alphabetic cousin, W32/Klez-E, came in a distant second with a paltry 5.8% and the black sheep of the family, the ‘H’ string, managed only 0.7% to come in sixth.
“The various manifestations of the Klez worm dominate April’s virus chart with variants taking up the number one, two and six slots,” observes Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos Anti-Virus.
“Klez-H was the hard hitter; some commentators went so far as to call this the biggest worm in the world ever. In reality, the success of Klez-H is damning evidence that computer users are failing to keep their anti-virus software up-to-date,” he adds.
