During MWC Barcelona 2021, Huawei Executive Director and President of Carrier BG Ryan Ding delivered a keynote speech, Innovation: Lighting up the Future. In addition, Huawei launched a series of 5G products and solutions oriented to “1+N” 5G target networks at the 2021 Mobile World Congress (MWC 2021).

As these services and products are supercharged by industry-leading innovation, they will further promote multi-antenna technology to all scenarios and all bands to build the leading 5G networks. Ding believes that ICT innovation is the key driver of the global economy, however, there is still room to innovate.

Pointing to 5G’s progress in South Kore and China, he talked about Huawei’s research which states that the rollout is 20-times faster than 4G, with 390 million subscribers in its home market. He added the combination of 5G digital infrastructure and ICT would drive the economic growth of €1.9 trillion in China and €130 billion in South Korea, proving that these operators were becoming drivers for national economies.

He believes that operator business models around the technology should primarily focus on three areas: business, consumer, and home. He further added that 5G might not develop a killer app or have one, but it could offer a “killer experience”, providing numerous consumer benefits.

“We still need continued 5G innovation, we still need to grow our system, we need to coordinate telecoms standards and integrate 5G into our core production process. 5G innovation is an ongoing process and this is just the beginning,” said Ding, emphasising the importance of innovation for growing progress.

Ding provided examples of how the technology was being used to boost efficiency and safety in sectors considered dangerous, such as steel and coal mining, as it allows the workers to work remotely.

Lastly, he talked about the ongoing evolution of home at life due to the pandemic, creating an increasing demand for 5G fixed wireless access services.
