KT’s head of enterprise group emphasised that the adoption of 5G services has been hampered in the enterprise market, citing the reasons of the slow development of devices and applications, as well as a lack of business cases.

Shin Soo-Jung addressed the audience at the GTI Summit, stating that clear customer value is not being articulated to justify the adoption of 5G for businesses, causing a delay in spreading the technology.

He explained, “many companies perceive 5G as simply a network, rather than a platform” with applications, partnerships and service support. He further added that difficulties need to be overcome for a “full-scale activation” of technology in the enterprise segment.

“We are developing differential technologies, so our customers can use value-added 5G as well as network slicing technology to separate traffic for each application.” KT has lately been pushing the transition from non-standalone to standalone 5G, but Shin provided no detail regarding the expected timeframe.

According to Shin, 5G is central to a $140 billion South Korean government initiative that will boost the nation’s ICT competitiveness by 2025. This can be expected with developing multi-access edge computing (MEC) convergence services and expanding networks.

Apart from this, an additional $17.4 billion will be invested in various industrial applications and smart cities. “KT is planning to cooperate with the government in all processes, from demonstration projects to successful commercialisation,” he said.
