GISEC GLOBAL 2024: Synology’s outlook on ransomware resilience and data security

In conversation with Joanne Weng, Director of International Business Synology, at the sidelines of GISEC 2024.

Synology, a Taiwan-based company dedicated to providing a comprehensive hybrid cloud ecosystem to help businesses secure their data against cyberattacks, also ensures business continuity with disaster recovery solutions.

At GISEC GLOBAL 2024, Synology showcased their latest products and developments in three dedicated zones. These innovations included identity and access management solutions, secure data storage, and disaster recovery solutions.

On the sidelines of the tradeshow, edge/ caught up with Joanne Weng, Director of International Business at Synology, and discussed their presence and focus for the region.

What’s the theme of your participation at GISEC this year? What are the key aspects that you’re highlighting at the show?

GISEC is a significant cybersecurity event in the Middle East, and Synology’s presence here aims to highlight our range of security solutions. These solutions encompass various aspects, such as identity and access management, secure data storage, and data protection.

We emphasise the importance of robust access control and offer zero-trust solutions for enhanced security. Through sophisticated identity and access management solutions, we ensure that only authorised personnel can access critical information, significantly reducing the risk of data breaches.

Our secure data storage solutions prioritise data protection, utilising AES 256 military-grade encryption and integrating technology like write-once-read-many (WORM) for added security.

Additionally, we stress the importance of data backup and disaster recovery, enabling organisations to mitigate the impact of unforeseen disasters and ensure business continuity, particularly in light of the increasing threat of ransomware attacks.

What makes Synology stand out in terms of ransomware resilience?

Synology stands out due to our comprehensive approach to ransomware resilience. We’ve been developing backup software for many years, offering a one-stop solution that integrates hardware and software. This eliminates compatibility concerns and ensures a seamless user experience.

Moreover, Synology has a dedicated security team, the Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT), which monitors and responds to security incidents related to our products and to fix critical vulnerabilities within 24 hours, outpacing the industry average of 60 days. Externally, we collaborate with security organisations globally such as FIRST (Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams) and CNA (CVE Numbering Authority) to stay updated on vulnerabilities and safeguard our solutions. We also actively invite external hacker professionals with our own bounty program to improve the security of our products together.

What new developments can we anticipate from Synology in the coming years?

In response to the growing volume of data, we’re introducing new data tiering solutions to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. We’re also expanding our backup offerings to provide more comprehensive data protection solutions. Expect announcements regarding these developments in the near future.

How has Synology performed in the MEA region regarding growth and market penetration?

Synology has experienced significant growth in the MEA region, exceeding 30 per cent of year-over-year revenue in the past year alone. We’re committed to further investing in manpower and local presence to support this growth. Our global customer base includes Fortune 500 companies, with approximately 50 percent adopting Synology solutions.

We’re also proud to serve regional well-known customers such as Huda Beauty and Universal Food Company, Al Mulla Group, Holiday Inn among others, reflecting our success and market penetration in the region.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
