Microsoft unveiled its next operating system, Windows 11, at a virtual event. Panos Panay, Microsoft’s product manager, promised faster, more minor security updates in the future. However, with updates being a common complaint amongst all Windows users, he ensured that the updates would happen in the background.

According to Microsoft, 1.3 billion devices are running on Windows 10. An early preview of the new operating system will be released in the next week for app developers. In addition, Windows 11 will enable users to configure multiple desktops for home, gaming, work, and more, like on a Macbook.

All existing Windows 10 users will receive a free update to Windows 11, except for some devices which don’t have the proper specifications for the update. These include a minimum of 4 gigabytes of RAM and 64 GB of gigabytes of storage.

Rather than the ‘Start’ button being on the left-hand side of the screen, it will now be available at the bottom centre. In addition, a new widgets window will provide personalised updates, with Microsoft Teams chat being built-in. The subscription service offering access to hundreds of games- Xbox Games Pass, will also be pre-installed.

Windows 11 will also offer an easier transition from monitor to the laptop. The new feature ‘Snap Groups’ and ‘Snap Layouts’ are collections of the apps you’re using at once that remain in the taskbar. These can be minimised or brought up at the same time for ease in task switching.

Furthermore, you can now plug and unplug from a monitor easily, without losing where your open windows were located.
