3D printing is largely used to develop prototypes, but the market has vast potential.

Al Seer Marine, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi’s International Holding Company (IHC), has announced the launch of an additive manufacturing unit to support the use of 3D printing on an industrial scale.

Unmanned vehicles and vessels

Al Seer stated that the new 3D printing capabilities would be used in the creation of the company’s unmanned vehicles and vessels. The technology would enable engineers to design complex parts much faster than was currently possible. Al Seer’s business unit also aims to develop large-scale additive manufacturing products and parts to satisfy growing international demand.

Guy Neivens, CEO, of Al Seer Marine, said, “The company’s decision to pursue additive manufacturing is testament to the technology’s growing influence and diverse applications across a range of sectors. This increased adoption has been largely driven by the digital process behind additive manufacturing, which allows for the creation of bespoke parts with complex geometries and little wastage – rapidly reducing costs and weight considerations while maintaining the part’s strength and integrity.

Leading the industry

“We are confident that our additive manufacturing business unit will be in a position to lead the segment across the region by 2025, introducing numerous advantages to our industrial capabilities and transforming the region’s shipping industry.”

According to Grand View Research, the global additive manufacturing market will reach USD 62.79 billion by 2028. At present, companies are using 3D printing to create prototypes, but there is significant potential for their use in general construction, according the market research firm.

The government of Dubai announced the Dubai 3D Printing Strategy in 2016 and underlined the emirate’s goal to become a major player in 3D printing during Expo 2020.
