Amazon Web Services commits $12.7 billion investment in India by 2030

According to AWS, this investment will contribute around $23.3 billion to India’s economy by 2030

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has revealed plans to invest $12.7 billion in India’s cloud infrastructure by 2030 to meet the increasing demand for cloud services.

According to AWS, this investment will contribute around $23.3 billion to India’s economy by 2030. The move follows the cloud giant’s previous commitment of $3.7 billion between 2016 and 2022, bringing their total investment in India to $16.4 billion by 2030.

Puneet Chandok, president of commercial business at AWS India and South Asia, emphasised the company’s dedication to generating positive social and economic impact in India.

“AWS is committed to driving positive social and economic impact in India. In addition to building cloud infrastructure and helping local customers and partners digitally transform, we have trained more than four million people in India with cloud skills since 2017, and invested in six utility-scale renewable energy projects to meet our global 100% renewable energy goal by 2025,” he said.

Chandok expressed confidence that their planned investment will have far-reaching positive effects, supporting India’s journey to becoming a leading global digital force.

AWS expects its investment in data centre infrastructure in India to create approximately 131,700 full-time equivalent jobs in Indian businesses each year. These jobs encompass various roles in the data center supply chain, including construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and others. Currently, AWS has two data centre infrastructure regions in India, which were launched in Mumbai in 2016 and Hyderabad in November of the previous year.

During the period between 2016 and 2022, AWS estimates its overall contribution to India’s economy exceeded $4.6 billion, while supporting nearly 39,500 full-time equivalent jobs annually in Indian businesses.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, acknowledged the significance of cloud and data center infrastructure as integral components of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’ Digital India vision.

“India cloud and the underlying data centre infrastructure are important elements of India’s digital infrastructure and ecosystem. I welcome the Amazon Web Services investment of $12.7 billion to expand their data centers in India. It will certainly catalyze India’s digital economy,” he said.
