Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, is scheduled to meet with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the country’s deputy IT minister during his visit to inaugurate the company’s first retail store in India this week.
Cook is expected to meet with Modi on Wednesday and will also meet with Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s deputy IT minister, according to reports.
The opening of Apple’s official stores in Mumbai and New Delhi indicates the company’s increasing focus on India, where it has been expanding iPhone assembly and boosting exports.
The meetings come as India has become the world’s second-largest smartphone market, and iPhones accounted for over 50 percent of the $9 billion worth of smartphones exported from India between April 2022 and February 2023.
Apple opened its first store in Mumbai on Monday and plans to open a second store in New Delhi on Thursday.
