China concerned over Japan’s chip export control

Japan had decided to join the US in banning some shipments of their most cutting-edge equipment to China.

According to a statement posted on the official website of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), China is deeply concerned about Japan’s action regarding the issue of semiconductor export controls to China and hopes that Japan will abide by the spirit of international rules.

China expects Japan to provide a fair, non-discriminatory and predictable business climate for firms, Li Fei, Assistant Minister of Commerce, said during an economic partnership consultation with Japan, according to a Chinese Ministry of Commerce statement.

The statement was delivered at the 16th China-Japan Economic Partnership Consultation, which was held via video and co-chaired by Japan’s Senior Deputy Foreign Minister Keiichi Ono and China’s Assistant Ministry of Commerce Li Fei.

The Netherlands and Japan, two of the top producers of advanced equipment for the semiconductor industry worldwide, had decided to join the US in banning some shipments of their most cutting-edge equipment to China in January.

The China Semiconductor Industry Association (CSIA) strongly objected to the restrictions on chip exports on February 15. The organisation warned that these restrictions would have a serious negative impact on both the Chinese and global economies and demanded that all nations work together to maintain supply chain stability.
