Elon Musk now a record holder for losing $200 billion

Guinness World Records revealed that Elon Musk has secured a world record for the largest loss of personal fortune in history

Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter CEO Elon Musk can now add a new title to his resume – a Guinness World Record holder.

In a blog post, the global organisation, which keeps track of a huge variety of records, revealed that Musk has secured a world record for the largest loss of personal fortune in history.

It cited Forbes’s estimate that Musk had lost around $182 billion since November 2021 but noted that other sources indicate the figure is closer to $200 billion.

While the exact figures remain unclear, Musk’s losses appear to have undoubtedly surpassed the previous record-holder, Japanese tech investor Masayoshi Son, who lost $58.6 billion in 2000.

Musk’s wealth loss was largely due to the dropping Tesla shares, which lost roughly 65 percent of their value during the company’s worst year on record.

This decline accelerated in October after Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter.

The rocky takeover, coupled with Musk’s behaviour on the platform, reportedly contributed to the biggest Tesla stock sell-off since the company went public in 2010.

In December, Musk was knocked off the top spot of Forbes billionaire’s list — a title now held by luxury goods magnate Bernard Arnault.

“As Elon Musk continues to build his own tech conglomerate, we won’t be surprised to see him bounce back too at some point in the future,” said Guinness in the blog post.
