Green connectivity weaving threads to a sustainable future

Organisations today are increasingly looking for low power consumption networks that will not enhance connectivity but also enable sustainability.

Connectivity weaves its digital threads across the globe, bringing us closer to our goal of a greener planet. As the only constant thing in technology is change, this ever-evolving industry and the latest advancements have given us low-power-consuming communication devices and networks, like 5G, that conserve energy. Businesses like Ericsson are aiming to create networks with low power consumption that will not only increase their bottom line but also help to create a more sustainable future.

When we caught up with Nicolas Blixell, Vice President and Head of Gulf Council Countries at Ericsson, he elaborated on the role of connectivity in a sustainable future.

“Connectivity plays a crucial role in solving today’s sustainability challenges, particularly in the reduction of carbon emissions. Ericsson, for instance, is tackling this issue in two ways. Firstly, by providing a digitalised infrastructure, our solutions help reduce the need for physical travel, thus reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation.”

“Additionally, Ericsson is also investing in R&D to reduce the power consumption of their equipment. For example, 5G technology requires less energy compared to 4G networks, and Ericsson’s products are designed to consume 40 percent less power than their previous generations. This shows our commitment to sustainability and their pledge to support the IT industry in reducing their carbon footprint,” said Blixell.

At LEAP23, Ericsson highlighted the potential cellular technology that will improve lives, redefine businesses and pioneer a sustainable future. Throughout the event, Ericsson focused on four main messaging pillars: transforming enterprises, reimagining consumer experiences, innovating for a sustainable future, and enabling limitless connectivity through technology.

Sustainability was one of the key focuses at LEAP23, which is a reflection of its importance to Saudi Arabia’s national vision. The government has been placing a strong emphasis on sustainability in recent years, recognising the crucial role that technology can play in addressing the challenges facing the kingdom. To that end, they have launched several initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable practices in the country and making the most of the latest technological advancements. One example of this is the government’s efforts to establish a robust and advanced digital infrastructure across the country. This includes initiatives aimed at increasing access to high-speed internet and other digital services, as well as developing advanced data centres and cloud computing services.

With connectivity being an important pillar to achieving sustainability, network providers and operator are uniquely position to drive value. “Ericsson is working with operators to provide them with a more sustainable solution through the implementation of a low-power consumption network. This not only benefits Ericsson but also the operators, who can market themselves as ‘green operator’ and take advantage of the various use cases that come with 5G technology. By doing so, Ericsson and its customers can work together toward a more sustainable future.”
