According to numerous news sources, Microsoft could announce thousands of job cutbacks today, becoming the most recent tech major to reduce its personnel as the world economy slows.

Sky News stated that about 5% of the company’s personnel would be affected by the layoffs, which will be around 11,000. Microsoft has 221,000 employees worldwide, with 122,000 of those working in the US.

According to Bloomberg, which cited a source familiar with the situation, the software company intends to eliminate positions in several engineering divisions. The layoffs may be revealed as early as today, according to The Wall Street Journal, which also cited a source familiar with the situation. Microsoft chose not to respond to the news.

Last year, Microsoft cut 1 percent of its workforce. Earlier this month, Amazon announced job cuts that would affect 18,000 employees across its business including Amazon Stores and its human resources department.
