Online payments in Bahrain on government portals shoot up 55%

Bahrain has been working to speed up digital transformation across the country

Online payments in Bahrain jumped 55 percent during the first half of 2022, according to results from the country’s Information and eGovernment Authority (iGA).

Financial transactions jumped 55 percent to approximately 1.9 million, bringing in BD334m ($886m) in revenue via the iGA’s various digital channels, including the National Portal, bahrain.bh, the eGovernment Apps Store, bahrain.bh/apps, and eKiosks.

There was also a 12 percent increase in the number of government apps users compared with the same period in 2021 and 9,789,000 visits to the portal during the first half of 2022, an increase of 31 percent.

Bahrain has been working to speed up digital transformation across the country.

The most popular apps were BeAware Bahrain, Islamiyat, and eTraffic with an increase of 88 percent, 81 percent, and 55 percent respectively.

Over 1.2m transactions were carried out via the portal, totalling more than BD306m ($812m) in revenues during H1 2022, an increase of 62 percent compared with the same period last year.

In the first half of 2021, the Central Bank of Bahrain said that POS and e-commerce transactions had risen 65 percent year-on-year, topping $3.62 billion in that time period.
