Revealed: Apple to source iPhone batteries from India

Apple moves to Indian market to reduce dependence on China

Apple is strategically looking to relocate its iPhone battery production to India, a move aimed at diversifying its global supply chain away from China. The company has informed its component suppliers, expressing a preference for sourcing batteries for the upcoming iPhone 16 from Indian factories.

This decision aligns with Apple’s broader initiative to reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing and supply chains, particularly in light of escalating trade tensions between the United States and China.

To facilitate this shift, Apple is actively encouraging battery manufacturers, such as Desay from China, to establish new production facilities in India. Simplo Technology, a Taiwanese battery supplier for Apple, has also been urged to scale up its production operations in India for future orders.

‘Make in India’ initiative

The company is exploring the possibility of sourcing batteries from Indian factories and plans to expand this initiative if the iPhone 16 battery supply proves successful.

In parallel, the Indian government announced that TDK, a Japanese supplier for Apple, is setting up a large facility in Haryana to manufacture battery cells for iPhones made in India. This move aligns with the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative, which offers incentives to companies investing in key sectors, including mobile phones and batteries.
