Saudi Arabia reveals new rule, requires mobile devices to shift to USB-C

This directive is slated to come into force in Saudi Arabia starting January 1, 2025, with the exception of portable computers or laptops

Saudi Arabia has unveiled its plan to standardise charging ports for all mobile phones and various electronics to USB-C connectors.

This directive is slated to come into force starting January 1, 2025, with the exception of portable computers or laptops. The announcement was made jointly by the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation, along with the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission.

This move forms an integral component of a comprehensive initiative aimed at enriching user experiences, ensuring high quality charging and data transfer technology, and fostering ecological sustainability through a reduction in electronic waste.

Furthermore, this transition complements the principles of environmental sustainability, with Saudi Arabia anticipating a substantial decrease in annual domestic charger and charging cable consumption by more than 2.2 million units. The projected outcome of this measure is anticipated to generate savings exceeding $45.3 million (SAR170 million) for Saudi consumers, while concurrently contributing to environmental objectives by curbing electronic waste by approximately 15 tonnes each year.

The execution of this mandate will unfold in two distinct phases. The inaugural phase, set to initiate on January 1, 2025, will encompass a broad spectrum of devices, spanning mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, portable video game devices, headphones, earphones, amplifiers, keyboards, computer mice, portable navigation systems, portable speakers, and wireless routers.

The subsequent phase, scheduled to commence on April 1, 2026, will encompass laptops as well. Thus, from 2025 onwards, businesses and suppliers operating within the Saudi Arabian market will be compelled to adhere to the USB Type-C standard. They are mandated to adhere to the technical and administrative specifications delineated in the pertinent technical regulations and standards.

A key characteristic of USB-C is its reversible, pill-shaped design, enabling users to insert the cable into their devices in either orientation. The USB-C port plays a crucial role in facilitating rapid charging and swift data transfer capabilities, thereby enhancing the user experience.
