With over 100,000 downloads since its February launch on the Google Play Store, the Jack Dorsey-backed Twitter competitor is in extreme demand.

What is Bluesky?

Bluesky is a text-focused social media service that was released in February. Users can upload images and brief messages of up to 300 characters. Videos and direct communications are currently not supported.

Similar to the social network Mastodon, Bluesky operates on a decentralised platform. Users can join a particular “server” that has its own distinct set of rules, interests, and members, allowing them to create autonomous social media experiences.

The objective of Bluesky is to increase user autonomy, variety, and creativity in the online social environment while addressing some of the dangers and difficulties associated with centralised platforms, such as censorship, privacy, and content moderation.

How is Bluesky a competition to Twitter?

Screenshots posted to the Google Play Store depict a social network interface that scrolls vertically and looks quite similar to Twitter. Each post has buttons for like, reposting, and leaving comments. Twitter fans should recognise the program immediately because of how much the symbols on the bottom toolbar mimic those on Twitter. As the name itself depicts it, even the basic colours followed are quite similar to that of Twitter.

How to sign up for Bluesky?

You can’t sign up, yet. Since Bluesky Social is still in development, it is only currently accepting a limited number of users. One can add email address to the waiting list and await for an invite from the company. Currently, Bluesky is sending new users one invite code every two weeks they’re on the app. Since the platform is still closed to the general public, and the demand is high, some users are even selling their invite codes.
