US bans Huawei, ZTE and other Chinese companies

US bans Huawei

Citing “an unacceptable risk” to US national security, the Biden administration has banned the approval of new communications equipment from China’s Huawei Technologies and ZTE.

The five-member US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted unanimously for the first time in its history to impose new regulations that will prohibit the importation or sale of specific technology devices that pose security concerns to the country’s critical infrastructure.

The final rules, which also prohibit the sale or import of equipment made by Chinese surveillance equipment manufacturer Dahua Technology, video surveillance firm Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology, and telecoms firm Hytera Communications Corp., were announced by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

The action signals Washington’s most recent attack on China’s digital behemoths in response to worries that Beijing would use them to spy on Americans.
