Qatar’s Hamad International Airport (HIA) has partnered with Smiths Detection to install an innovative screening technology at its security checkpoint. A part of the HIA’s Smart Security Programme, a new screening lane has been set up at HIA’s transfers hall, which can deploy advanced screening solutions.

This technology doesn’t require passengers to remove large electronics or liquids from the luggage, allowing faster passenger processing. In addition, this technology enables up to six people to put their items into trays simultaneously.

The passenger boarding pass scanners are incorporated before the screening, allowing them to electronically ‘tag’ their belongings to ensure they are tracked. Once the passenger removes the belongings from the tray, the system scans it to ensure nothing is left behind. One advantage of this is that if someone loses an item, it can be tracked quickly.

The system also includes a shoe screening capability that doesn’t require passengers to remove their footwear. In addition, the system has remote screening management for cabin baggage that constantly keeps the belt moving, along with high detection and low false-alarm rate, which leads to fewer random checks.

Fitted with UV-C modules to disinfect each tray before use, the scanner is being fast-tracked at HIA, making it one of the first airports to use it across all its transfers and departures lane by the end of 2021.

Saeed Yousef Al-Sulaiti, Vice President of Security at HIA, said, “The introduction of this advanced technology is born out of our growing partnership with the leading technology expert, Smiths Detection, and represents our shared dedication to creating and trialling technological solutions for the delivery of a seamless and secure experience at important checkpoints throughout the terminal.”

“We are proud to have harnessed the power of technology to enhance our operational excellence and passenger experience. We realise the potential of such an efficient security screening technology and look forward to delivering a truly secure and convenient screening process for all,” he added.
