Abu Dhabi-based Healthpoint, an M42 company, has announced a significant achievement: the successful completion of 100 surgeries using the ‘Mako’ robotic arm by Stryker.

Healthpoint introduced Mako to the UAE a year ago, marking noteworthy advancement in the healthcare field.

The ‘Mako’ robotic arm is pivotal in various procedures, from total knee and uni knee replacements to patellofemoral and hip replacements. It surpasses traditional techniques, ensuring heightened precision, better outcomes, faster recovery, and reduced discomfort – a substantial improvement in patient experience. Similar robotic surgeries are also widely available worldwide.

This innovation stems from Healthpoint’s partnership with leading orthopedic robotic surgeon, Dr. Jonathan Conroy, from the UK. His specialisation in robotic-assisted hip and knee surgery brings expertise to arthroscopic hip procedures and standard joint replacements.

Central to this progress is the orthopedic robotic arm-assisted surgical technique, empowering surgeons with unparalleled precision during joint replacement preparations. After a patient’s CT scan, an intricate 3D model is meticulously crafted using advanced digital technology. Surgeons gain a comprehensive view from various angles on a computer screen, allowing anticipation of the functional movement of the hip or knee joint. Pre-assessment of joint replacement enables the medical team to devise the optimal surgical approach. This meticulous planning ensures a thorough model and evaluation before surgery.

Omar Al Naqbi, Healthpoint’s Executive Director, expresses pride in the successful application of the ‘Mako’ robotic arm by Stryker. He noted that surpassing 100 successful surgeries demonstrates the remarkable capabilities of dedicated caregivers, transforming both medical team and patient experiences.

“Healthpoint will continue to monitor the market for new technologies that have the potential to improve the overall patient experience. This milestone serves as another achievement in our ongoing journey to deliver excellence in all aspects of care to our patients, and to bring world-class healthcare closer to home,” said Al Naqbi.

Healthpoint’s impact extends beyond the UAE, with patients worldwide seeking treatment. Notable cases include individuals from the United States, Kuwait, and Egypt. The youngest patient, aged 15, underwent a total hip replacement, while the oldest, aged 84, received a total knee replacement.
