AI ‘godfather’ regrets work, warns about technology’s dangerous future

“I want to sort of blow the whistle and say we should worry seriously about how we stop these things getting control over us.”

Geoffrey Hinton, godfather of AI

A computer scientist referred to as “the godfather of artificial intelligence” has left Google and warned the public about the risks posed by the technology, according to US media.

The New York Times quoted Geoffrey Hinton as saying that the field’s developments presented “profound risks to society and humanity.” Geoffrey Hinton developed a fundamental technology for AI systems.

“I’m just a scientist who suddenly realized that these things are getting smarter than us,” Hinton told CNN’s Jake Tapper in an interview on Tuesday. “I want to sort of blow the whistle and say we should worry seriously about how we stop these things getting control over us.”

Hinton said that the competition between the largest tech companies was forcing businesses to disclose new AI technology at risky rates, endangering employment and disseminating false information.

Geoffrey Hinton is internationally distinguished for his work on artificial neural nets, especially how they can be designed to learn without the aid of a human teacher. This may well be the start of autonomous intelligent brain-like machines.

In 2022, Google and OpenAI, the startup that created the well-known AI chatbot ChatGPT, began developing systems utilizing far more data than previously.

Because of the volume of data these algorithms were examining, Hinton told the Times that he thought they were in some respects surpassing human intellect.
